Established in 1734, Orange County was named in honor of William, Prince of Orange and covered an area that extended to the Mississippi River and Great Lakes. Here you can walk in the footsteps of James Madison, our nation’s fourth President and “Father of the Constitution,” at his beloved home Montpelier.  Delight in the breathtaking views, which Madison described as “a squirrel’s jump from heaven.”  The Civil War Museum at the Exchange Hotel located in Gordonsville is the only standing Civil War Receiving Hospital.  Early German settlers and their history can be found at the Germanna Museum.  If you visit the Barboursville Vineyard, be sure to explore the Barboursville Ruins, remnants of a home designed by Thomas Jefferson for Governor Barbour.  Great place for a splendid photo opportunity.

Orange, VA offers great opportunities for kayaking, canoeing and fishing on the Rapidan and Robinson Rivers.  Check out Rapidan River Kayak Company for wonderful guided trips and instruction.  The first weekend in November is the famous Montpelier Hunt Steeplechase races where folks enjoy wonderful tailgates, local wine and thrilling horse races.  Liberty Mills Farm creates unique corn mazes every year in the fall and offers strawberry and pumpkin picking in respective seasons.  There are orchards and farm markets to explore as well.   If you’re looking to saddle up and take a trail ride, check out Oakland Heights FarmSkydive Orange is a popular skydiving destination.  There are two golf courses in Orange County, several parks and endless miles of trails for hiking, biking and running.  There are numerous special events throughout the year like Ghost Tours, Easter Egg Hunt and Parade, Trashy Ribs and Blues Festival, Christmas Holiday Marketplace, Garden Week,  and new events are springing up yearly.  Orange, VA offers easy access to all that Lake Anna has to offer: boating, state park, restaurants, wineries, cidery and rental homes.   The Orange County High School Anglers Club often participate in the state championships!
